A recent study found that moving can be more stressful than going through a divorce. Luckily, if you stay on top of things, a move can provide you with the chance to organize your life and make a fresh start.
Discuss the Plan in Advance with the Manager
When someone moves into an apartment building or complex, it will always cause somewhat of a disruption to the other tenants. This is why it’s a good idea to discuss the details with the apartment manager ahead of time.
Ask the manager whether:
- You’ll need to use a special elevator and whether it needs to be reserved in advance.
- You’ll need to show a certificate of insurance from the moving company.
- The moving van will need to park in a certain location.
- There is anything else you need to know regarding the process.
Talking to your manager in advance not only makes things easier for you, but it also shows that you’re going to be a considerate tenant.
Get Organized for the Move
When it comes to moving, organization is power. The more you prepare in advance, the better your odds are of having a smooth moving day.
1. Gather the Right Information
Before moving day, visit the apartment and measure the doorways, hallways and other spaces. It would be a bummer to discover that your favorite couch wouldn’t fit through the front door. It would be much worse to discover this on moving day.
2. Prepare Your Things
When you’re packing up your things, it’s easy to convince yourself that you’ll remember what stuff is in which box. This is a common mistake that causes a lot of headaches during the unpacking process. There’s nothing worse than needing something the first night in your new place and being unable to find it.
There are different methods you can use to stay organized, and you have to do what you feel will work for you.
A couple of options include:
- Labeling the boxes based on the rooms they will go in.
- Filling boxes based on priority items. The last box you fill will contain the items you’ll need to unpack first. This might include things like your coffee maker, your hair dryer and other everyday items.
3. Part with Anything You Don’t Need
A move provides a wonderful opportunity to clear out items you don’t need. During the packing process, we suggest leaving a few extra boxes for donations and recycling. It’s always good for the soul to clear things out, and you’ll have the added benefit of having less items to bring to your new apartment.
When the big day arrives, remember to stay cool throughout the process. There will likely be minor problems along the way, but if you have a positive attitude, you’ll be relaxing in your new apartment before you know it.
